For the last two Wednesdays the team have been experimenting with differing ways of attaching thatch to the roundhouse porch. There is always a danger with such work that the tried and trusted way of traditional thatching is used, which stifles exploration of other options. Fortunately the team is completely unbiased by any competency in thatching and is thus able to approach the task with empty heads and a willingness, or even an expectation, that things may not go entirely well. In addition to the use of split, twisted and bent hazel stakes and horizontal ligers, we have also been trying freshly stripped willow bark, green willow and older small willow to help secure material. We know the original buildings only lasted for about 10 years, so any roof life beyond that is just a waste of effort. Unlike professionally made thatched roofs, which last for many decades, we are confident that our efforts will last for a more appropriate Iron Age lifespan. The water reed we are using is also rather old, but then so is most of the team, so we know age is no barrier.

Enjoyed the wonderful display of the sounds of ancient musical instruments on BH Monday last week. Is it possible to please repeat this event every few months or so?
Hi Jennie. We probably won’t do another one this year but will definitely do at least one next year.
