All the hard work on the mosaic is bearing fruit as the main room is virtually complete. All that is left is the centre circle, where an ambitious attempt to recreate an ‘unswept floor’ mosaic is being attempted. This involves using very small tesserae, only 2mm or 3mm square, to create realistic images of food scraps. The work has begun with Richard creating a mouse (tail yet to be added). The remainder of the mosaic will gradually expand into the gap between the two rooms, where the highlight will be a recreation of a Dolphin mosaic from Lopen villa (Somerset).

If a ‘heart’ like were possible, I would have clicked on it for that mouse!
To visit and see the mosaic in its unfinished state was fascinating and I look forward to when I can return.
Also, it’s interesting Avalon Archaeology is going to recreate the Dolphin mosaic from Lopen because I spent a memorable day there when Bob Croft gave an interesting talk to us on-lookers who had come from far and wide to witness the public revealing of that lovely mosaic.
