Snapshots in time

In 2014 we were lucky enough to do some small excavations at the Glastonbury Lake Village. In Trench 4 there was a small baulk of material that had been left untouched by the previous (1896-1910) excavations of Bulleid and Gray. On that small area was a dense layer of woodchips that had probably been deposited over a few minutes or hours one day over 2,000 years ago. For comparison a more recent snapshot in time are the woodchips created when the legs for the Roman couch were being roughed out for turning.
