How to mosaic around a door and owl or alien?

A busy time in the Roman building this week as we raised up both doors to give extra clearance over the mosaic. As they are on pivots not hinges, this just involved lifting them out of their sockets and dropping a small smooth pebble into the pivot hole. The problem of how to mosaic up to the pivot was solved by a bespoke lead flange, which looks quite fierce. In the mosaic itself our first corner detail appeared – opinion differed on whether it was an owl or an alien. The original mosaic from Newton St Loe shows how the face is made of two joining shapes.
