Latest carving in the longhall, based on images on the 8th century Ruthwell Cross in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, a location that was then part of the Kingdom of Northumbria. The animals depicted are a mixture of real and imaginary creatures, a reminder of the unfettered creativity of the original carver. Realistic birds are accompanied by a dragon/worm, a horse/dog/pig/snake and a bear/bird. The colouring is a product of a modern imagination.
