The daub walls of the roundhouse had several small cracks. In a 2m stretch, the cracks were filled with clay subsoil and smoothed over, creating a more visually appealing surface that should also have less water penetration. The ‘clay plaster’ mix of horse poo, clay subsoil and sand was applied over one side of the doorway and had hardly cracked at all after a week. Its application also formed a much smoother surface. Inside the roundhouse some old daub was mixed with new subsoil and water and lain down as a floor. The good insulation means that it will take many weeks to harden off, even in a heatwave.
