The back wall of the Roman building was subject to some vandalism by fans returning from the recent gladiatorial games at the amphitheatre at Charterhouse. As you can see from the pictures, two fights proved to be of particular interest. In the notable combat between the self effacing Superbus the murmillo and Creunus, the hoplomachus, who had triumphed in 5 of his 7 fights, the crowd were so pleased by the spectacle that Creunus earned a pardon for the crimes which had led him into the arena and the slave Superbus was given his freedom. The surprise of the day came when Atillus the murmillo, emerged victorious over that great champion Hilarius the parmularius, of Nero’s troupe, who had won 12 victory crowns from his 14 fights. Although badly wounded, the adulation of the crowd ensured that the doughty warrior Hilarius was granted his freedom, after which he chose to continue in the profession as a trainer. Sadly both lions were still too ill from their recent voyage to take part, much to the relief of the condemned, whose fate will have to wait until the next games.

Brilliant!
