Roman pottery kiln bricks

There is a cunning plan to build a Roman pottery kiln at the Avalon Archaeology site. As a first step, some bricks are being pre-made for the kiln structure using a mixture of clay subsoil and straw. After forming in a wooden mould, they are briefly dried out beside the fire before being secreted in the eaves of the longhall to complete their drying process. Later, they will be bonded together in the kiln structure using a clay slip as a mortar. The kiln itself will be quite small, not much different in diameter from the small circle of bricks around the fire.
