Roundhouse thatching

After a long break we can begin thatching the roundhouse roof again. This winter has been so wet that our friends at the RSPB Ham Wall nature reserve have been unable to cut any reeds this year because it has been impossible to get the water levels low enough. Plan B was to use reed thatch from roofs that are being renewed. The quality of this ‘pre-loved’ thatch (the lighter colour on the photo) is still good enough for our purposes, bearing in mind that we plan for the roundhouse to only have a 10 year life, like the originals at Glastonbury Lake Village.
