A replica has been made of a bed based on the evidence from the Oseberg and Gokstad ship burials in Norway for the back room in the Saxon longhall. Why go to Norway for a bed? We just have no evidence for beds from Anglo-Saxon England, so we have to go where the evidence survives. Our version of the bed is slightly different from the original as we have augmented the foot end with some extra carvings, with heads from the Oseberg cart and a pair of semi-human figures from a timber behind the helman’s head from the Oseberg ship. The fierce horse heads are based on the ones from the Gokstad bed. There is a petition at the moment to support the completion of the new museum in Oslo where all these wonderful things are preserved and displayed.

This is amazing, cannot wait to come and see the house in person.
