Our regular Carving Club with local bodger Richard Devaney began on Monday the 18th. Despite the weather, we rallied together to learn the basic techniques and familiarise ourselves with the range of chisels available. We started by attempting some simple relief carving, with each of us carefully tapping away to produce our initials in our section on a plank of oak.
Once that was mastered, we went on to embellish the letters and frame them, either with authentic prehistoric patterns based on the designs found on objects from Glastonbury Lake Village or using our own creativity.
Our aim for these sessions will be to build a replica Iron Age bed for the roundhouse, decorated with a whole host of carvings fit for the prehistoric setting.
