Very sad news that Professor John Coles passed away on Thursday after suffering a heart attack. John was a pioneer in some many aspects of archaeology from wetlands, to experimental archaeology and Scandinavian rock art. In Somerset the achievements of the Somerset Levels Project, which John and Bryony Orme (later Coles) ran for 15 years, are still one of the high points of the county’s archaeology and were the birth of wetland archaeology as a discipline around the world. He will be very sadly missed.
