The Saxon longhall has gone to the dogs this week. The latest fantastic carving by Mike arrived and was installed on the main beam between the doorways. Like the carvings (by Kath and Mike) on the vertical posts below that beam, the designs were inspired by marginalia in the Harley Golden Gospels which were created in the early 9th century at Aachen, possibly for Charlemagne – a nice reminder of the continental links to, and influences on, the Saxon Kingdom of Wessex.
