No smoke without fire

A big site clearup has begun as part of the preparation for opening in the summer. To dispose of some of our vast stocks of waste wood the hypocaust in the Roman building was lit and proved quite effective at warming the floor. By the end of the day the floor surface furthest from the furnace has reached 25 degrees C, while at the furnace end it surpassed 50. This was much appreciated by the mosaicists lounging (surely ‘working hard‘ Ed.) inside.
