For the site tours at the weekend the longhall was cleared out and the ‘Saxon’ furniture was placed inside. Keen followers of the blog may remember that two of the chairs are based on a burial from early medieval Germany and the decorative ones replicate the end boards of beds from Viking ship burials in Norway. The benches and trestles are not based on any archaeological evidence, except for the carvings which copy Anglo-Saxon or viking designs on metal and wood. Just as soon as anyone uncovers good archaeological evidence for Saxon furniture, we will gladly copy it, but until then we will have to make do with evidene from further afield.

Loved our site visit on Saturday and was so impressed with the work. I do hope you can get funding to finish the project enough to open it to the general public soon. If we wish to write a letter if support who do we send it to?
Hi Margaret. Glad that you enjoyed the tour. If you would like to write a messsage of support for the funding bid to do the landscaping and get the site open to the public, you could email that to me at richard.brunning@swheritage.org.uk . Many thanks.
Looks very good
Thanks for the pic.
